Description:Mid 19th century 8 day fusee trunk dial wall clock by Dutton from Fleet Street,London. Mahogany 2 piece case with bezel secured to back box by 4 pegs. Back box has locking bottom door and 2 pendulum side access doors. The top of the back box has a stencilled number painted on it. Inside the locking bottom door is a paper sticker marked VR with crown cypher. 12" diameter silvered and engraved dial marked with Roman numerals, Queen Victoria's royal cipher and crown, and dated 1855. The blued steel hands and dial are protected by a cast brass glazed bezel. The rectangular plated chain fusee movement separated by knopped pillars, is by Thwaites and Reed and numbered 12621. This number also dates the clock to 1855. The pendulum is the usual Dutton style steel rod and brass bob. The Houses of Parliament placed an initial contract on Dutton in 1851 to provide 20 clocks. A mix of Thwaites and Reed and other makers supplied the movements. The hands and engraving was carried out by John Hardiman. The cases were provided by John Webb.
